INDIVIDUAL SHOW
SECRETS OF THE PERFECT SHOW
Very often, people think that my sand animation is an improvisation. I'm delighted when they have this impression because it means I’ve successfully created a sense of wonder.
That’s exactly how it should feel. In reality, though, it involves careful preparation and years of experience. It’s similar to a dance, a song, or a solo performance on the violin. For an artist to go on stage and perform a three- or five-minute piece with mastery, each element must be perfected—sometimes this takes months of practice and more than 20 years of training!
The approach to sand animation is much the same. First, we develop the script and concept — a creative task that we collaborate on with the client. Then, the sand images are designed based on the script. The most challenging part is ensuring that each image smoothly transitions into the next. This is the core of sand animation. Once the script is ready and the sand drawings and transitions are planned, we begin coordinating it with the music. Video recordings are made, and music is carefully selected to synchronize with the hand movements — this creates the impression of effortlessness for the audience.
The next stage is rehearsing the drawing speed. For a performance to be of the highest quality, one minute on stage requires approximately one hour of practice. Technical support also plays a crucial role in ensuring success. Artistic skill alone is not enough to create a memorable show. The final step is setting up the equipment at the event with the help of a professional assistant. Every technical detail is fine-tuned: the sand animation table, cameras, sound, and projector are all perfectly synchronized.
Now, the audience can hold their breath for a few moments and immerse themselves in the enchantment of this beautiful art form.
